At public universities, tuition fees depend mainly on the family’s financial situation (ISEE indicator) and occasionally on the GDP per capita of the country of origin. For the vast majority of programmes, tuition fees range from 157€ to 3200€ per year of study.

Living costs depend primarily on the city. Milan and Rome are the most expensive cities, but they are still more affordable than, for example, Paris or London. On the other hand, many smaller student cities can offer affordable living costs.

Accommodation
The difference is particularly noticeable in Rome and Milan, as renting a room is often 150 - 300€ more expensive than in other cities. Halls of residence are also available, with prices varying considerably depending on the standard.

ISEE determining tuition fees
ISEE is a financial indicator that reflects the applicant’s parents’ income situation. By submitting it, you can reduce your tuition fees, while if you do not provide an ISEE, you will be charged the highest tuition fee, which is usually up to around 3200€ per year.

GDP per capita - impact on tuition fees
At some universities, tuition fees are calculated based on the GDP per capita of the applicant’s country of origin (this is the case, for example, at Sapienza University of Rome). In this situation, Polish applicants can usually expect to pay around 700€ - 900€ per year.

Scholarships and support
In addition to reduced tuition fees, you can apply for regional scholarships and financial support. Their availability depends on the university and region and is often also linked to the ISEE indicator.

Student work
Italian universities make it possible to balance your studies with life outside university, so working is certainly an option. However, you should bear in mind that finding part-time work in Italy, especially without knowing Italian, is not always easy. Many students choose to work remotely (e.g. by offering private tuition).

Application deadlines
Deadlines vary significantly between universities and degree programmes. They most commonly fall between February and the end of June, but some programmes have deadlines as late as September. Bocconi and selected private universities also offer early admission up to a year in advance.
Important information
Applications are usually submitted directly through the university’s system. Italy does not have a single centralised process for EU applicants, so the requirements, tests, documents and deadlines must be checked separately for each programme. There is also no limit on the number of degree programmes you can apply to in this country.
How to get in?
For many degree programmes, an entrance exam is crucial, most commonly CEN-T, SAT or an internal university test. Sometimes a CV, motivation letter, portfolio, references or an interview are also taken into account. The IMAT exam is required for medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine.
Do school-leaving exam results matter?
School-leaving exam results do not affect the success of your application - you only need to pass the exam. Application success usually depends on entrance exam results or grades, or additional documents such as a CV, motivation letter, essay, and sometimes also an interview.
Language requirements
For programmes taught in English, universities usually accept IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge at B2/C1 level. Requirements depend on the university and degree programme. For some degree programmes, a language certificate is not always mandatory (e.g. medicine).
Document recognition
Once admitted, the university may require a Declaration of Value or Statement of Comparability, which confirm that Polish documents are compatible with the Italian system. The process can be formal and time-consuming, so it is worth planning it as soon as you finish school. The timeframe for submitting the accreditation documents can vary significantly depending on the university.
ISEE and tuition fees
Tuition fees at public universities often depend on the family’s financial situation. By submitting the documents required for ISEE, you can reduce the fee to as little as a few hundred euros per year. Without submitting the documents, the university will usually charge the highest possible tuition fee - however, due to the costly process of obtaining an ISEE, it is not always worth applying for one.
