Applying to university in Sweden

Find out how the Swedish admissions system works, which documents are required and how to increase your chances of studying in Sweden.

Application deadlines

For the autumn semester, the main deadline is usually 15 January, with results announced in April. Final documents, such as your school-leaving certificate and Matura results, can be submitted to some universities (though not all) by early July. The second application round runs until 15 April, but the number of available places may then be limited.

Important information

Applications are submitted through the central UniversityAdmissions.se system. You can choose up to 8 programmes. You rank the degree programmes in order of preference, so your selection strategy is very important. Unfortunately, you cannot apply for some bachelor’s programmes directly in your final year of secondary school because you will not be able to submit your Matura certificate in time (this depends on the university and the date on which Matura certificates are issued).

How to get admitted?

For bachelor’s programmes, the main factors are your school grades, Matura results, meeting subject requirements and, quite often, a CV and personal statement. For master’s programmes, your bachelor’s degree, academic transcript and the relevance of your previous degree are important, as well as, in many cases, a CV, personal statement, interview and entrance tests.

Language requirements

For programmes taught in English, IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge qualifications at B2/C1 level are most commonly required, usually IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL around 90. At many universities, your English result from the Polish Matura may replace a certificate, but this must be checked individually.
