Applying to university in the Netherlands
Find out what the university application process in the Netherlands looks like, what numerus fixus programmes are and how to increase your chances of being admitted to a university in this country.
Application deadlines
The 15 January deadline applies to numerus fixus programmes (around 15% of all bachelor’s programmes). For most programmes at research universities, you apply by 1 May, while universities of applied sciences often accept applications until 1 or 15 August. Often, the sooner you apply, the sooner you can start looking for accommodation.
Important information
choose a maximum of 4 degree programmes, including only 2 numerus fixus programmes. The process can vary considerably depending on the university - application portals, deadlines and the process for accepting your place, the way certificates are submitted, etc. may differ.
How to get admitted?
Requirements vary considerably depending on the university and degree programme. Typically, the following are taken into account: a CV, personal statement, and sometimes an interview or entrance tests (mainly for numerus fixus programmes). Grades are an admission criterion for some degree programmes. Master’s degree applications often also require letters of recommendation and entrance tests tailored to the programme.
Language requirements
A language certificate is required by most universities. The most common requirements are IELTS Academic min. 6.0, TOEFL iBT approx. 80 or Cambridge C1. For more demanding degree programmes, the required level may be 6.5-7.0 or higher. The certificate can often be submitted after the application itself.
Do final exam results matter?
Final exam results alone usually do not determine the success of an application in the Netherlands. However, in some cases, specific advanced-level subjects may be required (e.g. mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics), and occasionally you may also need to achieve a certain result in a particular advanced-level exam (usually 40% / 50%).

I've now been living in the Netherlands for over seven months, and I'm really enjoying it here. Both my university and my degree programme have been great. The beginning was challenging, but everything became much easier with time. One of the biggest advantages is that I managed to get a room in a student residence very close to the university. I've also started learning Dutch because I'd like to stay in the Netherlands for a while after graduating. Overall, I'm very happy with my decision. ☺️☺️
