Application deadlines
The earliest deadlines are for Early Action and Early Decision - usually 1 or 15 November, followed by Regular Admission - most often at the end of December or in January. Some universities use rolling admissions, so applications may be accepted even in spring or summer.
Important information
In the USA, there is no limit to the number of universities you can apply to. Applications are usually submitted through Common App, Coalition App or directly through the university’s system. Each university may have its own essays, fees, documents and requirements.
How to get admitted?
Admissions are holistic - grades, extracurricular activities, essays, recommendations, the applicant’s profile and sometimes SAT/ACT scores all matter. Universities consider not only your results, but also your story, motivation, potential and fit with the university.
Are SAT/ACT scores required?
Not always. Many universities have a test-optional policy, so the SAT or ACT is not compulsory. However, strong scores can strengthen your application, especially when applying to top universities or for merit-based scholarships.
Scholarships and financial aid
In the USA, you can apply for need-based aid, merit scholarships and athletic scholarships. At some universities, financial aid can cover a large proportion of the costs, but it often (though not always) requires a separate application, documents and additional financial forms.
Student visa
Once you have been admitted, the university issues an I-20 form, which is required to apply for an F-1 visa. You then pay the SEVIS fee, complete form DS-160 and schedule an interview at the embassy. It is worth starting this stage as soon as you accept the offer.
