IMAT is a unique test – after all, how many of us solved critical thinking questions at secondary school or mastered the vast range of general knowledge topics? The IMAT exam is difficult and requires proper preparation. Many people, despite having great potential and extensive knowledge of biology and chemistry, achieve poor or average IMAT scores because they underestimate the need to prepare.

As with any exam, the entrance test for medical studies in Italy has its own specific format – repeatedly practising the right types of questions, combined with preparation in test-taking strategy and English language skills, will help you achieve a high IMAT score and compete for admission to the top universities in Italy.

Proper preparation for the IMAT exam focuses on three areas:

Preparing for the IMAT in terms of subject knowledge

Many people considering medical studies have a relatively strong foundation in the form of fairly extensive knowledge of biology and chemistry. Even so, some of the topics from these two subjects that appear on the IMAT are not covered in Polish secondary schools. In addition, many topics require revision or filling gaps in knowledge.

Biology and chemistry questions make up half of all questions in the IMAT test. The remaining questions cover mathematics (4 questions) and physics (4 questions), as well as general knowledge and critical thinking (as many as 22 questions in total). Preparing for mathematics and physics is also important, but candidates who are properly prepared for the general knowledge and logical reasoning sections can gain the greatest advantage over other applicants. General knowledge questions cover a wide range of completely unrelated fields. Smart preparation and focusing on the topics most likely to appear can increase your chances of achieving a high exam score. Preparation for the critical thinking section mainly involves gaining a basic understanding of the principles of logic and becoming familiar with the types of questions that appear on the IMAT – this process requires well-planned preparation, and preparing for this section without the support of the right teacher can be difficult.

Preparing for the IMAT in terms of strategy

In addition to the highly specific questions, there is also the duration of the exam – 100 minutes for 60 questions is not much time. Based on our experience, we know that a good strategy leads to greater effectiveness – directly through the insight gained from solving questions and indirectly through the confidence it provides.

Preparing for the IMAT in terms of English language skills

You may have knowledge of all the sections included in the entrance exam for medical studies in Italy, but without an appropriate level of English, achieving a high score will be impossible. The IMAT lasts 100 minutes and consists of 60 questions, including both short questions and longer, more complex ones. If you waste time reading instructions several times and do not understand the questions and answers, your chances of achieving a high IMAT score will unfortunately be very low.
