Studying Abroad – Costs

How much does studying abroad cost?

Are you wondering how much studying abroad costs? Do you think that higher education in another country is beyond your financial reach?

The high cost of studying abroad is one of the most common concerns among applicants. Another frequent worry is the difficulty of getting admitted to a foreign university. So, let’s briefly discuss the costs associated with studying and living in other countries. Below, you’ll find plenty of practical information — and we’ll probably surprise you in a pleasant way :)

Tuition Fees at Foreign Universities

In some countries, tuition fees can indeed be very high. Studying in England, for example, is a significant financial investment. Prices range from £9,000 to even £25,000 per academic year (approximately 50,000 PLN – 130,000 PLN per year). In the United States, universities charge from around $10,000 up to $60,000 per year (approximately 45,000 PLN – 280,000 PLN per year).

We are used to the fact that studying at public universities in Poland does not involve any fees. Can we encounter this in other countries too? Absolutely! Contrary to these high figures, there are other countries where the cost of living and studying is affordable – and often even comparable to that in Poland.

Studying Abroad – Costs – Studying Abroad for Free

Are you wondering in which countries you can study abroad for free? We have great news! There are several countries in Europe where higher education is completely free, and a few more where tuition fees are very low. Additionally, in some of these countries, you can receive generous scholarships — even up to €850 per month.

For EU citizens, tuition-free education is available in:

  • Denmark
  • Norway
  • Sweden
  • Finland
  • Germany (there is an administrative fee ranging from €250 to €700 per year, which usually includes a yearly public transport ticket for the city)
  • Malta

As you can see, there are plenty of opportunities! Also, keep in mind that in countries like the Netherlands or Ireland, the amount of scholarship funding you can receive often exceeds the tuition fees — meaning that while studying there, you could receive more money than you pay.

Scholarships at Foreign Universities

The Netherlands

The Netherlands is known for its practical approach and very high standard of education. Tuition fees in this country are around €2,530 per year, but the vast majority of students receive scholarships that exceed the cost of their studies!

As part of the financial support provided by the Dutch government, you can receive up to €1,100 per month! It’s worth noting that up to €700 per month of this amount can be non-repayable financial aid. This support is divided into two types of grants:

  • Basic grant – €270 per month, available to every EU student who works at least 32 hours per month.
  • Supplementary grant – up to €430 per month. To receive it, you must also work 32 hours per month, and in this case, the amount awarded depends on your parents’ income.

Additionally, you can benefit from free public transportation either from Monday to Friday or on weekends (you choose), and there are several types of student loans and other forms of financial support available. The average cost of living in the Netherlands ranges from €850 to €1,000 per month (in Amsterdam, on average €1,100–€1,500 per month).

If you are interested in studying abroad and looking for a place that offers excellent education quality, an international atmosphere, and generous scholarships, then the Netherlands is the right choice.

Ireland

Although this island nation is one of the more expensive countries in Europe, with tuition fees of around €3,000 per year, the available financial support makes Ireland relatively affordable for many students. In Ireland, the amount of scholarship you can receive depends on your parents’ income. In total, you may qualify for a reduction (or complete waiver) of tuition fees as well as a monthly scholarship of up to €570. The cost of living in Ireland ranges from €850 to €1,300 per month, with Dublin being the most expensive city.

As the example above shows, due to attractive scholarship programs, it is worth considering universities even in countries with relatively high tuition and living costs. As you can see, in some countries, the amount of financial aid can even exceed the cost of studying.

Denmark

Although Denmark has reduced the number of degree programs taught entirely in English, there are still dozens of bachelor’s programs and hundreds of master’s programs available. If you are considering studying abroad, enjoy Scandinavian countries, and are drawn to living in a tolerant, modern, and innovative society, Denmark will be an excellent choice.

But let’s focus on scholarships… exactly! First of all, higher education in Denmark is completely free, and on top of that, you can receive a scholarship of up to €850 per month! The only condition is that you must work at least 43 hours per month.

Yes, you read that right :) You can receive nearly 4,000 PLN in non-repayable financial support.

Sweden

Sweden also offers an excellent scholarship system. Financial support is provided by CSN (Centrala studiestödsnämnden). To receive it, you must meet at least one of several eligibility criteria. The maximum grant amount is approximately 3,660 SEK per month (about 1,400 PLN), while student loans can reach up to 8,400 SEK per month (about 3,200 PLN).

Similar to Denmark and the Netherlands, receiving a scholarship or student loan depends on working a certain number of hours. For those without family in Sweden, a common way to qualify for the grant is by working at least 10 hours per week for a minimum of 10 weeks. We can also add that combining studies with work is very common in Sweden and should not be difficult for you!

Most popular countries

Are you wondering which countries are the most popular when it comes to studying abroad? There are small changes from year to year. Sometimes, due to changes in the admission systems for international students or an increase in tuition fees, some countries lose popularity while others gain it. (This was the case with the United Kingdom after Brexit — following a significant rise in tuition fees and the removal of student loans, many students decided against studying there.)

So, which countries are currently the most popular? You’ll find the answer below ;)

1. The Netherlands

In recent years, the number one destination has been the Netherlands – this is the country chosen by the largest number of international students. Below, you’ll discover why the Netherlands has such an excellent offer when it comes to studying abroad.

The Netherlands, a country of development and technology, is the most popular choice among international students, primarily due to its high quality of education, widely available scholarships, and the fact that it is a welcoming place to live. Its universities and higher education institutions are internationally recognized for the quality of their programs. The wide variety of available study fields allows students to choose a discipline that matches their interests and career goals.

Moreover, close cooperation with industry and advanced teaching methods create a fruitful environment for developing practical skills and creativity. By focusing on sustainability and social innovation, the Netherlands attracts graduates interested in projects related to renewable energy and environmental protection.

After Brexit, the Netherlands became particularly attractive to international students, surpassing the United Kingdom. Dutch universities offer a wide range of programs — both theoretical and practical. The education system provides access to both research universities and universities of applied sciences, meeting the expectations of diverse groups of students.

The tuition fees are competitive, and the opportunities for financial support (as described above) — such as scholarships and student loans — are numerous. Additionally, the Netherlands offers an international student environment, which is crucial for personal growth and building global connections.

The infrastructure of Dutch universities, featuring modern technology and beautiful campuses, is another strong point that attracts students. Meanwhile, student life in the Netherlands, with modern dormitories and student towns, provides a rich cultural and social experience.

By choosing this country, you can be sure that it will offer you everything you could possibly expect from studying abroad!

2. Ireland, Germany, Italy, and Malta

In second place, we have a tie between… Ireland, Germany, Italy, and Malta.

We didn’t want to create a typical ranking where it’s obvious which country is number 2, 3, 4, and so on, because… in reality, it’s not that clear-cut. Each of the countries mentioned above enjoys great popularity. Below, we’ll describe each of them and present the reasons why they are among the top choices — based on feedback from our applicants, who are now students in these countries.

Ireland

Ireland, often referred to as the “Green Island,” is highly valued for its high-quality education and wide range of study programs, attracting students from all over the world. The country offers a vibrant student life with a rich variety of cultural activities and student organizations. Brexit has made studying in Ireland more affordable compared to the UK, attracting even more international students. Tuition fees are around €3,000 per year for undergraduate programs, and scholarships can reach up to €570 per month. Additionally, some students may receive further financial aid covering 50% or even 100% of tuition fees.

The Irish education system offers a broad spectrum of qualifications, from certificates to master’s degrees, across various fields, including IT, business, psychology, engineering, medicine, and the arts. Another significant advantage is the abundance of study programs taught in English — something that’s not always the case in other European countries.

In summary, studying in Ireland combines excellent education with diverse development opportunities, creating an attractive environment for students from around the globe.

Studying Abroad – Studying Abroad – How to Get In?

Do you need outstanding academic results to get accepted to a university abroad?

Absolutely not! This is one of the most common myths. Regardless of your grades, you have a very high chance of being accepted into your dream program abroad. To make it happen, you just need to choose the right universities and degree programs — and also create a plan B (and sometimes even a plan C). Of course, there are some programs with very high competition, such as medicine at top universities, which are harder to get into. However, studying abroad is much more achievable than many people think. Excellent results will certainly help you and increase your chances of getting into a prestigious university, but even with average grades, you still have a good chance of being accepted. With a smart choice of universities and a strong application, your chances are usually high!

What influences the success of a university application abroad?

In Poland, final exam results (matura) are the decisive factor. That’s why many students ask us: “Do I have a chance to study abroad with these results (or predicted results)?”

You might be surprised, but in many countries, final exam results have little or no impact on the success of your application. This is the case for most universities in countries such as the Netherlands, Germany, or Italy. Many foreign universities place great emphasis on whether the applicant is a good fit for the program. In practice, this means they evaluate your CV, motivation letter, references, portfolio, and how you perform in an interview. Additionally, some universities conduct entrance exams.

Admission requirements vary depending on the country, university, and field of study. For example, in the Netherlands, your overall GPA is more important than final exam scores, and your motivation letter, CV, and interview can give you a significant advantage. The situation is similar in Italy. On the other hand, in Ireland, final exam results are the key factor, while in Spain, they account for about 55% of your admission success. As you can see, there are many factors involved — which is why it’s crucial to prepare a strong application and choose the right countries, universities, and programs.

Is it difficult to get into a university abroad?

As mentioned above — it depends on which country, university, and program you choose, and how strong your application is. However, by making smart choices, you can get into your dream university even with average grades (though of course, we always recommend aiming for the highest results possible ????).

Minimum requirements for studying abroad

To be eligible to apply, you must meet the minimum requirements — those without which a university cannot accept you. For bachelor’s programs, this usually means passing your final exams (and sometimes achieving certain results) and obtaining a language certificate. The most commonly accepted certificates are IELTS, TOEFL, and Cambridge, with a required level typically B2 and occasionally C1.

For master’s programs, the minimum requirements usually include having completed a number of thematically relevant courses during your bachelor’s degree and — as with undergraduate programs — having a valid language certificate.

When should you start preparing your application?

Some students contact us just six weeks before the application deadline and still manage to prepare everything on time. However, we strongly recommend starting well in advance. This approach has several important advantages:

First, you won’t have to rush your research. You can carefully consider your choice of country, university, and program.
Second, more time allows you to prepare your application calmly and without stress. Leaving everything to the last minute is definitely not a good idea.
Third, you’ll have much more time to build a strong candidate profile — taking steps that will present you as the ideal applicant. A well-prepared profile makes a big difference, which is why at Eduworld we create a detailed action plan for our students to improve their application success.
This is also why many students start preparing for studying abroad one, two, or even three years before the beginning of their studies.
